El Fuerte Rojo es uno de los antiguos monumentos arquitectónicos ubicados en la zona antigua de Delhi. Venir a Delhi y no ver el Antiguo Fuerte significa no ver Delhi en absoluto.
La información histórica
El Fuerte Rojo fue construido en el siglo XVII como residencia de Shah Jahan, el emperador mogol.
La altura de sus muros alcanza los 16 m cerca del río y los 33 m a la salida de la ciudad.
El emperador Shah Jahan no escatimó en gastos en la magnífica decoración del Fuerte.
La exposición más famosa del Fuerte es el trono imperial. Estaba hecho de oro puro con incrustaciones de diamantes, esmeraldas, zafiros y rubíes. Hoy en día, los restos del trono fueron transportados a Teherán.
En 1739, el fuerte fue atacado por las tropas del emperador persa Nadir Shah, y en 1857 la fortaleza cayó bajo el ataque del ejército británico, que se llevó todos los objetos de valor del fuerte.
Arquitectura
El Fuerte Rojo tiene dos entradas. La puerta de Lahore se considera la entrada principal, cerca de la cual siempre se han celebrado importantes mítines y discursos de los líderes populares. La segunda puerta del Fuerte cumple una función oficial: sirvió como entrada a la procesión ceremonial del emperador.
Cerca de la entrada se encuentra el mercado Chatta Chowk. Durante el reinado del emperador Shah Jahan, sirvió como bazar para las damas que vivían en el palacio y, en los tiempos modernos, aquí se pueden comprar joyas y alfombras hechas a mano.
Detrás del bazar se encuentra la Casa del Tambor Nubat Khan, un museo donde se pueden ver antiguos instrumentos musicales que pertenecieron al emperador: oboes, platillos y timbales.
En el Fuerte también es interesante observar los baños imperiales (hammam) y las salas donde el emperador celebraba audiencias. Curiosamente, se reunió con gente corriente y de clase alta en diferentes salas.
Y, por supuesto, la perla del Fuerte es el Rang Mahal (Palacio del Color), decorado con oro y plata. Aquí vivían esposas y concubinas.
Reglas de asistencia
El Fuerte Rojo está abierto al público todos los días excepto los lunes de 9 a 18 horas. La tarifa de entrada es de 250 rupias. Está prohibido tomar fotografías y grabar vídeos de forma gratuita, por lo que todos deben pagar 25 rupias adicionales.

Una excursión organizada al Fuerte incluye visitas a todos los lugares interesantes: el palacio, la mezquita, el museo, el bazar, y gracias al guía no sólo verá todo, sino que también aprenderá detalles interesantes de la historia de la fortaleza.
Un recorrido por el Fuerte te llevará al menos 1,5 horas si lo exploras por tu cuenta y 3 horas si reservas un recorrido organizado con guía. Puedes solicitar un tour con guía de habla inglesa o un tour individual.

El Fuerte Rojo es un símbolo de la independencia india. Fue aquí donde se declaró por primera vez la libertad de la India en 1947. Y desde entonces, cada año, en el Día de la Independencia, se iza la bandera sobre el fuerte y el Primer Ministro se dirige al pueblo.
El Fuerte Rojo está protegido por la UNESCO y está incluido en la lista de sitios del patrimonio mundial.
Como llegar
Si ha reservado un tour organizado al Fuerte Rojo, definitivamente lo recogerán en autobús desde su hotel y lo llevarán a la fortaleza. Si decide caminar hasta allí por su cuenta, lo mejor es tomar el metro hasta la estación Chandi Chowk; desde allí podrá ver inmediatamente las murallas de la fortaleza.
